Since the indignados movement took the streets of Spain I have been asking myself what is the solution to the problem of democracy in the XXI century. How do distribute the decision power among so many people that the system cannot be corrupted, threatened or bought off by a few? How to empower the demos beyond the possibility of treason?
I started writing my thoughts about how society could self organise on a blog (ES), trying to generate a movement for the search of an effective bottom up democracy, what I called Total Democracy (Democracia Total). There is also an incomplete English version of the blog.
I realised later that although most of my readers agreed with what I wrote, ideas by themselves were not able to mobilise them. I joined for one year a expat branch of the Spanish indignados movement called Marea Granate, but when DiEM25 was founded I understood I had to take a step forward. Soon after the movement started to take momentum, together with other people I realised that there was a strong need to improve internal communication systems and decision making algorithms in order to empower European citizens through this vibrant and powerful initiative.
This is how the working group Democracy in DiEM25, DiD, came into being. Our goal is to put into practice existing and experimental methods to radically transform the practice of democracy, first inside, the outside the movement. I have posted my political thinking in the DiD blog in which we try to identify the problems of grassroots organizations and propose possible solutions.
